The main street to the town called as the Prospect Avenue which soon came to be called as Hollywood Boulevard, became the hub of houses of rich westerners who could afford to" winter in California". Hollywood was founded as an independent city in 1903 and merged with the City of Los Angeles in 1910. Hollywood is situated west-northwest of Downtown Los Angeles and is fame as the historical center of movie studios and movie stars. As movies exploded in popularity in 1910s and 1920s, the name Hollywood became synonymous with "the Entertainment Industry".

The famous 15m high white letters "Hollywood" sign was originally "Hollywoodland", and its purpose was to advertise a new housing development in the hills in 1923. From the ground, the contours of the hills give the sign its well-known "wavy" appearance. When observed at a comparable altitude, the letters appear straight-across.
