South Africa is an often overlooked destination for trekking, and should be high on the list of any active hill walker wishing to explore some of the best trekking terrain on the continent.
Many will want to reach higher altitudes in Kwa-Zulu Natal, where you can visit the majestic Drakensberg. We are one of the few companies able to take you on a fully supported trek into the southern Drakensberg, which is less explored than the northern reaches.
South Africa is a huge country and could comfortably absorb Spain and France, Europe's two largest countries. Cape Point is over 2000kms from the Limpopo River border with Zimbabwe in the north. In 1992 it emerged back from the abyss of apartheid and began the process leading to democratic majority rule. The Rainbow nation was born and soon after 'High Places' ran its first South African walking trip in 1995.
Drakensberg High
Our popular mountain walking tour of the spectacular escarpments and peaks in South Africa's premier mountain range. A good balance of vigorous hiking, unfrequented trails, comfortable and always interesting accommodation and good food makes for a quality experience. One or two ascents are on steep ground and require sound footwork and confidence.
Cape Point
Bartholomeu Dias, the Portuguese seafarer, was the first to sail around the Cape. This was in 1488. On his return voyage, which must have been particularly stormy, Dias stopped at the south-western tip of South Africa, and named it Cabo Tormentoso, or Cape of Storms. King John of Portugal later gave it the name Cabo da Boa Esperança, or Cape of Good Hope
