White Water Rafting

water rafting expedition is one of the most adventurous and enjoyable ways to experience the wildlife and natural environments of a country. White Water Rafting Safaris at the Savage Camp in Sagana River Base have talented and internationally experienced guides who are at hand to make your adventure the most memorable in your life. Situated just 95km from Nairobi along the main Nairobi - Nanyuki road, the Savage Camp is arguably the finest campsite in East Africa and despite being so near Nairobi, it's secluded and secure.

This can be done in Tana River, Athi River, Mathioya River and the Uaso Nyiro Rivers in Kenya and The Nile in Uganda. One needs no previous rafting experience and has the option to paddle as part of a team or ride in an oar raft where the guide rows the boat.

Athi River
The section of the Athi River that we run borders Tsavo National Park to the east. In many ways, this river is unique. Wonderful scenery, a multitude of wild-life, hugely varied and spectacular bird-life, coupled with the best of medium grade white water river, makes for a truly unforgettable experience.

Of the wild-life, bushbuck, giraffe, buffalo and elephant are among the most common animals seen. Crocodiles are certainty, as are monkeys and baboons. The bird life along the river is of course spectacular and to date our guides have recorded over 120 species.

If you like multi-day expedition style trips then the Athi is for you! Flowing through Tsavo National Park, we raft up to 80km's of Kenya's second longest river with three days and three nights on the river. The river gives an awesome mixture of relaxing calm water with game viewing (Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, crocodile and hippo have all been seen from our boats) and abundant birdlife interspersed with some great whitewater (up to grade IV). The trip usually goes out fully self supported with our guides providing breakfast (full cooked or cereals/fruit/toast), lunch (a selection of cold meats and cheeses with bread/salad and fruit) and dinner (three courses). If a more luxury trip is your style then vehicle support (at an extra cost) is available to bring those added necessities. Mathioya River
The Mathioya is one of the hardest rafting rivers in Kenya. With over 450m of descent in around 22km the Mathioya River offers some of the most technical water to be found in Kenya. A narrow, low volume river with rapids up to grade V. Previous experience is recommended.

We offer a two day package which includes a day on the Tana then a second, action packed day on the Mathioya River. The river can only be run during certain water levels.

For inexperienced rafters a two-day package is available; one day rafting on the Tana, overnight at our camp, then have a second action packed day on the Mathioya.

The Tana River
The Tana River is a drop pool river offering and exciting day of white water rafting. The adventure starts with a 3 km of easy class II and III white water, where plenty of opportunity to gain the practice of paddle skills required to run the lower part of the river. A 6 km section follows with an hour or so of relaxation to view the abundance of bird life around. Cool off with a swim in the warm water. The final 7 km of river, back to the campsite starts with some easy class III waters where paddle commands are gone over again. It is now the 3 big rapids (class IV and V) with names like Captains Folly, Can of Worms because of its four 90 degree bends in succession, and Sphincter Flexor. Subject to water levels we may be able to "surf" in "fish eye" and then swim the next couple of minor rapids. Numerous smaller rapids brings one on to the last big one - Spasm, a series of drops over ¾ km section with a big surprise half way through. We reach the take out point/campsite about 4 to 5 hours after setting off, where a full barbeque lunch awaits us. Plenty of beer and soft drink Included.

Ewaso Ng'iro River
This is a similar trip to the Athi, with three days and nights on the river. The river runs through Samburu National Park, where both the animals and river are wilder. Trip length and nature are as for the Athi River with more serious and sustained water...
